BJP Mumbai chief Ameet Satam has advised the BMC to file criminal cases against those putting up illegal hoardings and create a transparent advertising policy.

Mumbai: Illegal hoardings, banners and posters remain a concern across Mumbai, especially at the most festive times. Mumbai BJP president and MLA Ameet Satam has now called for action against the culprits and for Mayor Ritu Tawde and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to take action against them.

Satam wrote to the mayor to propose a clear and transparent policy for controlling unauthorised hoardings and banners in the city. He also asked the municipal authorities to take action against people who put up illegal advertising structures.

Satam said unauthorised hoardings not only affect Mumbai's look but also cause safety problems. His request comes as the city is still battling off illegal publicity material as the BMC has been removing banners, posters and hoardings from public spaces.

Satam Suggests Advertising Boards On Electricity Poles

One of Satam's best suggestions is to allow advertising boards on electricity poles to be standardised at approved places. The BMC could lease these advertising spaces through a transparent process and make money from it. This could create a legal space for advertisements while also generating revenue for the civic body. It would solve the problem of unauthorised advertising and would provide advertisers with specific and approved spaces.

BMC Removes Thousands Of Illegal Displays

The problem is not new to Mumbai. Every year, the BMC removes around 15,000 to 20,000 unauthorised hoardings, banners and posters. Nearly 45 percent of them are said to be linked to birthday greetings for political leaders and festive celebrations. Mumbai Alert News

The city has also said that prior written permission is required for outdoor advertisements under its Outdoor Advertisement Display Policy. Violations can invite action under applicable civic and state laws.

Mayor Ritu Tawde Also Announces Crackdown

Satam’s demand comes shortly after Mayor Ritu Tawde called for action against illegal posters, banners, hoardings and promotional stickers across Mumbai. The BMC launched a drive from September 25 to stop the erection of unauthorised publicity items on bridges, flyovers and monorail pillars following Ganeshotsav. Tawde also demanded legal action and heavy fines against those responsible for such displays.

Demand for Joint Policy Meeting. Satam has urged the mayor, BMC administration and other agencies concerned to hold a joint meeting and to develop a time-sensitive and transparent policy for authorised advertising. The proposal aims at two things—faster removal of illegal structures and clearer rules for legal advertising. With illegal hoardings still appearing at festivals and other major events, the current requirement is an indication of how Mumbai must navigate the balancing act of advertising needs, civic revenue, public safety and the appearance of public places.
