One Killed And Six Injured After Roof Collapses At Delhi Airport, IndiGo And SpiceJet Cancels Flights

Portion Of Roof From Terminal 1 Collapses On Cars, Civil Aviation Ministry Assures Alternative Arrangements

After heavy rains in Delhi on Friday morning, June 28, a portion of the roof of the Delhi Airport’s Terminal-1 collapsed on cars. Reportedly, one person has been killed due to the collapse and six people have been injured. According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, all departures from Terminal 1 have been temporarily suspended until further notice from the ministry. Terminal 1 only operates domestic flights by IndiGo and SpiceJet. Alternate arrangements are being made in the meantime, the ministry informed.

Operations Of Terminal 1 Temporarily Shifts To Terminals 2 and 3

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu visited the airport terminal after the accident for inspection purposes. He said that all operations of Terminal 1 will be shifted to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 for the time being. In regard to the seriousness of the situation, the Union Minister also declared compensation worth Rs. 20 lakh for the family of the victim along with compensation of Rs. 3 lakh to those injured due to the accident.

Rescue Operations Called After Accident Reported To The Delhi Fire Services

According to official reports, the roof sheet along with the support beam collapsed at the airport, causing harm to four cars parked around the pick-up and drop areas of the Airport. The accident was first reported to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) at around 5:30 AM. Rescue operations were called at the site and a man was witnessed being taken out of his damaged car after the collapse.

IndiGo And SpiceJet Cancels Flights Due To Structural Damages At The Terminal

IndiGo later reported that the flight operations were disrupted due to structural damages reported at Terminal 1 of the airport. Passengers were unable to enter the terminal and all flights had to be canceled. Passengers who had already reported at the terminal to take their flights were permitted but passengers with flights scheduled later in the day will be offered alternatives, as told by an IndiGo spokesperson. Later upon this confirmation, SpiceJet too cancelled all its scheduled flights.
