Samrat Choudhary Set to Become Bihar's First-Ever BJP Chief Minister

New Delhi (India) April 14:Samrat Choudhary, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is poised to make history as the new Chief Minister of Bihar. He is set to take the oath of office at 11 am on Wednesday, April 15, following his election as the head of the BJP's legislative party after Nitish Kumar stepped down from the position. This moment marks a significant milestone, as Choudhary will become the first Chief Minister from the BJP in Bihar's history.
For many years, the BJP has been a key player in Bihar's coalition politics, but now it has the opportunity to govern independently.

Nitish Kumar Resignation Announcement

Nitish Kumar, who has been the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar, announced his resignation after meeting with Governor Syed Ata Hasnain at Lok Bhavan in Patna. This decision was shared by Kumar on social media platform X, alongside Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, JD(U) national working president Sanjay Jha, and state minister Vijay Choudhary.
"I have done a lot of work for the people of Bihar. Recently, I decided to leave the post of chief minister…and therefore, after today's cabinet meeting, I met the governor and submitted my resignation to him," Kumar said.

Political Legacy of Choudhary Family

Samrat Choudhary hails from a strong political lineage in Bihar; his father, Shakuni Chaudhary, served six terms as an MLA from Tarapur, and his mother, Parvati Devi, was also a legislator. This rich political heritage inspired him to enter politics at a young age. He began his political journey in 1999 with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and quickly made his mark, being elected as an MLA from Parbatta in Khagaria in 2000. He served as a minister of state under Rabri Devi.

Rise of Kushwaha Leader in Bihar

Choudhary, a member of the Koeri or Kushwaha caste—an important community among Bihar’s other backward classes—has experienced a dynamic political career. Before the Yadavs, the Kushwaha community was the largest among the backward castes, accounting for about 6-7 percent of the state's population.

Since entering politics in 1990, he has navigated through various parties, including the RJD and JD(U), before joining the BJP in 2017. His switch to the BJP marked a turning point, allowing him to take on more influential roles within the party.
In the BJP, Choudhary has quickly risen through the ranks, becoming the state unit Vice President, then the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, and finally the state president in 2023. Now, with Nitish Kumar stepping down, he is ready to take the oath of office and lead Bihar as its new Chief Minister, a role he has been preparing for throughout his political journey.
