YouTube Services Restored After Global Outage Hits Millions Worldwide

Massive User Base Affected

Google-owned YouTube is the world’s biggest video sharing service, and its average monthly active user is more than 2.5 billion. YouTube experienced a widespread outage late Tuesday as hundreds of thousands of users complained of problems worldwide.
The outage impacted more than just that main site. It hit YouTube.com, and the mobile app, YouTube Music, YouTube Kids, and even YouTube TV logins, leading to issues throughout the entire service. 

Root Cause: Recommendations System Glitch

The company explained to the official TeamYouTube X account that the outage was related to issues with the recommendations system. That algorithm is supposed to provide you videos it believes you will be interested to watch according to previous viewing habits, it said. The details were further outlined on a Google support page.
The site posted, “The issue with our recommendations system has been resolved and all of our platforms (YouTube.com, the YouTube app, YouTube Music, Kids, and TV) are back to normal!” on a help page.

Quick Resolution and Official Updates

Google acknowledged the problem early in the disruption in a public statement released by TeamYouTube, saying, "If you're having trouble accessing YouTube right now, you're not alone -- our teams are looking into this."
The platform also said that “an issue with our recommendations system prevented videos from appearing across surfaces on YouTube (including the homepage, the YouTube app, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids).”

Downdetector Data Reveals Scale

Downdetector, a tracking website, said over 300,000 people reported problems accessing the video-sharing site, but after a peak at around 0100 GMT the reports were falling off. At the worst of the outage, visitors to the home page of the website were offered an invitation to return later. 

According to data from Downdetector, 56% users in the US experienced a problem with their YouTube app and 21% reported some issues or complaints with the company’s website. 12% of YouTube users had difficulty logging in to the platform. 

Widespread Outage Disrupts YouTube Services

Users noted errors opening the YouTube app and website, videos that did not play, and repeated “something went wrong” messages. YouTube TV and several Google services also reported higher levels of complaints over the same period, indicating a more widespread issue on the platform side of a problem.
Downdetector collects outage reports relying on reports of such events submitted by end-users and other signs and alerts from a variety of sources and may therefore not provide the entire pool of impacted users, but it is a good predictor on the impact of these types of disruptions.
