Vijay Urges PM Modi to Freeze Lok Sabha Seats at 543

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to make necessary Constitutional changes to keep the strength of the Lok Sabha fixed at 543 members.

Vijay's letter comes a day after the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution opposing changes in the current distribution of Lok Sabha seats among states. The resolution also called for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.

What Did Vijay Ask PM Modi?

In his letter to PM Modi, Vijay requested the Union government to consider the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly on August 12, 2026.The resolution stated that the total strength of the Lok Sabha should remain permanently fixed at 543 seats.

It also said that the present allocation of seats among states should remain unchanged. This means that the number of Lok Sabha seats currently allotted to each state should be maintained.

Vijay urged the Centre to bring the required Constitutional amendments to implement these demands.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Backs 33% Women’s Reservation

The Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution also called for one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.According to the resolution, the reservation should be implemented in the upcoming Lok Sabha election and subsequent elections to state assemblies.

The issue of women's reservation has been linked to the wider debate over delimitation and the future distribution of parliamentary seats.

Why Is Delimitation a Major Issue?

Delimitation refers to the process of redrawing the boundaries and determining the number of seats in electoral constituencies based on population changes.The issue has become politically important because states with slower population growth fear that a future delimitation exercise could change their representation in Parliament.

Tamil Nadu's resolution seeks to protect the existing distribution of Lok Sabha seats among states while also ensuring that women receive 33% reservation.

Who Supported the Tamil Nadu Resolution?

The resolution introduced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly received support from the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Vijay.The main opposition party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), also supported the resolution, along with Left parties and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK).

However, several parties opposed it. These included the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK).

Centre’s Delimitation Plan

The demand comes amid discussions at the national level over changing the existing delimitation framework.According to the information cited in the report, the Union government introduced the Constitutional (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 in Parliament in April.

The proposed legislation sought to remove the existing 50-year freeze on delimitation and allow a fresh exercise based on the 2011 Census.The proposal also sought to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha. However, it failed to secure the numbers required for passage in Parliament.

One of the key concerns surrounding the proposal was the lack of clarity over how the additional seats would be distributed among states.

Vijay’s Demand Comes Amid Delimitation Debate

Vijay's letter to PM Modi has added another political dimension to the ongoing debate over delimitation.

By asking the Centre to retain the Lok Sabha's strength at 543, the Tamil Nadu chief minister is seeking to maintain the current representation of states in Parliament.At the same time, the Tamil Nadu Assembly has backed 33% reservation for women, making both seat distribution and women's representation central to its demand.
