Delhi Capitals’ skipper and Indian wicket keeper Rishabh Pant has been banned for slow over rate due to a breach of IPL Code of Conduct. The offence occurred during the match against Rajasthan Royals.

Rajasthan Royals vs Delhi Capitals (Match 56) )that was held on 7th May was the third instance this season when Delhi Capitals were unable to finish their innings in time. At the start of the last over, they were 10 minutes behind the cut-off time resulting in them being allowed only 4 fielders outside the 30 yard circle. Rishabh Pant was also fined Rs. 30 lakhs for this offence. The rest of the players, including the impact substitute were fined Rs. 12 lakhs or 50% of their match fee, whichever is lower. This is Delhi’s third instance of committing the same offence this season.

Previously, on April 4, Pant was fined Rs 24 lakh for a second over-rate offence against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Vizag during Match 16 of this IPL season. Prior to it, Pant was fined Rs 12 lakh by BCCI for maintaining a slow over rate in a match against Chennai Super Kings at the same stadium.

The release announcing the decision said, “Mr Rishabh Pant, Captain, Delhi Capitals has been fined and suspended for one match for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024.”

It further added, “As per Article 8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Delhi Capitals filed an appeal challenging the ruling of the Match Referee. Following this, the appeal was referred to the BCCI Ombudsman for review. The Ombudsman conducted a virtual hearing and affirmed that the decision of the Match Referee remains final and binding”

Due to this decision, DC will be without the services of their skipper in the crucial match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday, May 12th as the race to the playoffs continues to tighten with each match having numerous consequences.

Pant will return to the team for the match against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday.
