A Father's Dream Came True

Asmita was born in Belonia, Tripura, into a poor family. Her father ran a small bicycle repair shop but he always encouraged her to pursue her dreams even in her dire financial circumstances.

She said her father made many sacrifices to support her career. When she suffered a serious knee injury, he sold what little he had and personally took her to Delhi for treatment.

Sadly, her father died in December 2025, seven months before the Commonwealth Games.

Remembering him after her victory, Asmita said she wished he had been there to see her win the gold medal.

From Athletics to Judo

Asmita did not start her sporting journey in judo.

She loved sports as a child as well: running and shot put. Later, a school coach saw her talent and encouraged her to try judo.

It was that decision that changed her life and she eventually became one of India’s top judokas.

She is also a Sub-Inspector of the Uttar Pradesh Police, which is an asset to her sporting career and for her family.

The Winning Moment

The gold medal match against Heidi Quach went into the Golden Score period.

Instead of waiting for her opponent to make a mistake, Asmita decided to attack.

She would later say that she had told herself to stay positive and take control of the match. Her brave approach made her win India’s first Commonwealth Games judo gold.

A Special Celebration on the Podium

After receiving her medal, Asmita held it close to her chest and made a heart shape with her hands.

She said that the gesture was not planned. It was her way of thanking her coach Yashpal Solanki, her late father and every Indian who supported her journey.

She wanted every person back home to feel that the gold medal belonged to them as well.
