A suspect has been arrested following the stabbing of four American college teachers in China. The victims were Iowa's Cornell College instructors, participating in an academic exchange. Chinese police arrested a 55-year-old man named Mr. Cui in connection with the attack. A Chinese national was also injured while trying to stop the attack.
Statements from Authorities
Chinese police stated that the attack appears to be an isolated case and that an investigation is ongoing. Lin Jian, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry, confirmed, "All the wounded were taken to the hospital and received proper treatment. None of them are in danger of losing their life." Lin also assured that China remains committed to protecting the safety of all foreigners in the country.
US Response
The White House has contacted Chinese authorities to ensure the victims' needs are met and that appropriate law enforcement steps are taken. US diplomats have also spoken with the victims.
Local Reactions
Iowa congresswoman Ashley Hinson expressed horror on social media, saying, "I am horrified that the Cornell College faculty members had been brutally stabbed." Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds urged prayers for the victims' recovery and safe return, stating she is in touch with federal and state departments about the attack.
Victim's Condition
One of the victims, David Zabner, was mentioned by his brother, Iowa state lawmaker Adam Zabner. He told CNN, "David has been stitched up and seems to be recovering."
