The launch of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in India has faced criticisms from the US, which are against the Act and its fundamental influence on the religious liberty in the country. As India implements this act which will be handled with the intention to give easily Indian citizenship to the persecuted migrants from their neighbouring countries, United States statement and explanations from Indian officials become two very important matters to be discussed.
of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA):
The CAA focuses on benefits for those undocumented immigrants who are Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian, and have for a while been victimized in those home countries. Critique that Muslims were not included in the Act upgrade religious discrimination discussions prompted debates on that question. Now, Indian Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah holds that the CAA is aimed at the minorities who are in the neighbouring countries but face religious persecution.
US Concerns and Monitoring:
USA raised the issue of illegalities employed in CAA implementation and how it might end up infringing on religious freedom. The incumbent US State Department spokesman highlighted that there should be an active follow up to ascertain that India will enforce the Act accordingly. While the United States spokesperson mentioned the fundamental democratic principality of equal rights and equality under the law of all religions, it showed that respecting these principles is very crucial while implementing of the CAA.
Implementation of the CAA:
By CAA the Indian government has reduced the time of living appointed to be a citizen from 11 to 5 years for the people who entered the country by the 31 of December 2014. The Indian government has ensured Indian Muslims that the CAA will not affect their position as Indian citizens in any way. The stated statement firmly said that the act just give citizenship and not having any affects to Indian Muslims who always enjoy equal rights as Hindus.
Reassurance from Indian Authorities:
Indian authorities, again, asserted that CAA’s primary purpose is to facilitate citizenship and underlined the fact that no Indian citizen will be deprived of the status because of the Act. The government's reassurance manifest the government's determination to root out characterized inequality and discrimination, and to fill the people in over the fears and misconceptions the Act might create.
