New Delhi (India) March 9:In a thrilling showdown at the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad , India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, clinched victory against New Zealand with a stunning 96-run margin. This win not only marks India as the first team ever to defend its T20 World Cup title, but it also set a new record for the largest victory margin in the tournament's history, surpassing their previous record of 93 runs against Namibia in Delhi.
This incredible achievement makes India the first host nation to win the tournament, the first defending champions to retain their trophy, and the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times. 

India's Explosive Batting

In the match, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to bat first against the formidable defending champions. However, things took a turn when Neesham dismissed Indian opener Sanju Samson, who dazzled with a spectacular 89 runs off 46 balls, including eight sixes and five boundaries. Neesham also took out Ishan Kishan (54 off 25) and captain Suryakumar Yadav for a golden duck, adding to India's challenges.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma contributed a quickfire 52 runs off just 21 balls, and Shivam Dube chipped in with 26 not out off eight deliveries. India finished strong, scoring 52 runs in the last five overs, showcasing a dominant performance throughout the match.

NZ Collapses Under Pressure

New Zealand struggled to keep pace with the steep target, as India's bowlers tightened their grip on the game. Despite a few attempts at a counterattack, wickets fell consistently. Jasprit Bumrah led the charge with an outstanding bowling performance, taking 4 wickets for just 15 runs, dismantling the middle order with his trademark precision. Axar Patel also played a crucial role by picking up key wickets. Ultimately, they were bowled out for 159 runs in just 19 overs, sealing the match decisively in India's favor.

Samson's Dream Half-Centuries

Sanju Samson was honored as Player of the Tournament for his impressive three consecutive half-centuries.
He said, “It feels like a dream. Very happy. Out of words and emotions, just feels a bit surreal. It [the journey] started one or two years before when I was part of the 2024 T20 World Cup [winning squad], but didn’t play a game. I thought I needed to put so much work in order to achieve this moment.”

“[Got] Lots of guidance and suggestions from senior players that have helped me out. For the last couple of months, I have been in constant touch with Sachin [Tendulkar] sir. I thought about my mindset, and had big conversations with him [around that]” in his comments after the win.

Bumrah's Match-Winning Spell

Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Match for his mesmerizing figures of 4 for 13.
He said, “It feels extremely special. I have played one final in my home venue, but this one feels really special.I was very motivated and clear in my plans. I used all my experience and today was a wonderful day as all my execution went to plan.”
“Before this tournament I was in the zone where I was trying too hard. But in this format, I let the game come to me. I was prepared and read the situation to the best of my ability”
“To win Man of the Match here in a World Cup final, it doesn’t get better than this. Because of the experience, I have played on belters here before”, after the win.
