New Delhi (India) February 14:In the run-up to Sunday’s high-voltage India-Pakistan clash in the T20 World Cup, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha said that he expected that the game would be played in the right spirit but was noncommittal about the usual handshake.
“Cricket should be played in spirit. And what I expect, obviously, does not matter. But I feel that the game should be played the same way as it has been since the beginning of cricket. And the rest is up to them and whatever they want to do,” Agha said.

Handshake Tradition Under Scrutiny

The handshake tradition will not likely stay in place, too, as the two teams gear up to face one another in what is sure to be a high-stakes match. Neither captain is expected to take the other’s hand at both toss or post match.
Asked whether there would be a handshake, he said, “You will find out about that tomorrow.”

Defending Usman Tariq Amid Criticism

Salman also made use of the press conference to cut off its ongoing narrative about Usman Tariq. The bowler has been under fire for doing something unusual, including doing a sidearm action when he is supposed to go forward and a pause in the stride of his delivery.
"He’s only a player to us. You have hyped him. We don’t care about what people are saying about his actions. The guy has been cleared twice and I don’t understand why there is so much talk," Agha said.

Challenge to India: Bring Your Best

Salman Agha also challenged the Indian team for how they wanted their team to select its players. He urged the inclusion of Abhishek Sharma who missed the last India fixture against Namibia because of stomach flu.
"I really hope he (Abhishek) will play tomorrow. He is a good player, and we want to play against the best team they have. Really hope he's recovering well and can play," Agha said.

India's Stance Traced to Pahalgam Incident

India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, made a public announcement in Dubai during the Asia Cup in September, when such issues became quite apparent. The comments were made months after an initial practice was adopted by the Indian team during the Men’s Asia Cup in September 2023.
The Indian team refused to shake hands with the Pakistan players in all three matches of the tournament. Also, they declined the trophy from ACC President Mohsin Naqvi, also the Interior Minister of Pakistan.
Yadav said his staff would not shake hands with Pakistan, as a show of respect towards the Indian people who were martyred in the terror act at Pahalgam in April 2023. This move was also seen as a gesture of solidarity with the Indian Army on 'Operation Sindoor'.
