New Delhi (India) May 8: BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari to be new Chief Minister of West Bengal, first BJP leader to lead government in the state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday officially announced senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari as the unanimously elected leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal.

Suvendu Promises “Sonar Bangla”

Addressing new BJP MLAs at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre following the announcement Suvendu Adhikari became emotional as he said it was time for "bhoy out, bhorsha in" and vowed for a government of delivery women's safety and a "Sonar Bangla". 

He said, “Today, I assure you that in the coming days, our government and organisation will remain committed to the ideology of the party and to the cultural spirit of West Bengal. We will fulfil every promise made in our manifesto within the stipulated time.”

“We need to create a Sonar Bangla. We need to make Bengal a safe place for women. Amit Shah said we have been able to remove fear. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given us trust. It is time for bhoy out, bhorsha in. For that, we need to work more and talk less,” he added.

Shah Calls BJP Victory Historic

Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated Suvendu Adhikari for becoming new CM of West Bengal and also mentioned the victory of BJP in the state was a "historic mandate". He also mentioned that Suvendu Adhikari's leadership in the state will bring good governance.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes. I hope this historic mandate becomes the means to fulfil the aspirations and expectations of the people of Bengal,” Shah said.

He added, “I have known Suvendu Adhikari for a long time. He is a fighter. I have seen both his political rise and his connection with the grassroots.”

Suvendu Defeats Mamata In Bhabanipur

Suvendu Adhikari created one of the symbolic victories of the election as he defeated the outgoing CM Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur which was one of her strongest political forts. 

He retained Nandigram which is also a politically important constituency since the start of the anti-land acquisition movement that turned him into one of the major political leaders of West Bengal. 

Grand Swearing-In Ceremony On Saturday

Adhikari and his Council of Ministers are scheduled to be sworn at a grand ceremony at the Brigade Parade Grounds on Saturday, with the Prime Minister, top Union ministers and some 20 BJP-ruled state CMs likely to attend in large numbers. 

BJP won the West Bengal assembly elections historically and ended the Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress(TMC) 15 years in power. The West Bengal Governor RN Ravi had dissolved the state assembly on Thursday which gave the way for the new government.
