As heads of 23 opposition parties converged in New Delhi for the crucial INDIA bloc meeting on June 8, one notable name was missing from the guest list — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The absence surprised many political observers because Congress, one of the major constituents of the INDIA alliance, is currently supporting the TVK-led government in Tamil Nadu. However, political analysts point to several key reasons why Vijay's party was not invited to the high-profile opposition gathering.

1. TVK Has No MPs in Parliament

The biggest reason behind TVK's exclusion is simple: the party currently has no representation in Parliament.

The June 8 meeting was primarily organized for opposition parties that have members in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha and are actively involved in coordinating parliamentary strategy against the BJP-led NDA government.

Congress leaders have also indicated that participation was largely limited to parties with MPs. Although TVK formed the Tamil Nadu government after its historic victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, the party has not yet contested a Lok Sabha election. As a result, it currently has no MPs and remains outside the core parliamentary coordination mechanism of the INDIA alliance.

2. TVK Is Not a Formal Member of the INDIA Alliance

Despite its growing ties with Congress, TVK has not officially joined the INDIA bloc.

The alliance between Congress and TVK currently exists only within Tamil Nadu politics. Following the Assembly elections, Congress supported Vijay's government and backed TVK on key political matters, strengthening ties between the two parties.

However, being an ally of Congress in Tamil Nadu does not automatically make TVK a member of the INDIA alliance at the national level. Since the June 8 gathering was an official INDIA bloc meeting, invitations were largely restricted to parties that are formal constituents of the coalition.

3. DMK-Congress Fallout Has Reshaped Tamil Nadu Politics

TVK's rise has triggered one of the biggest political shakeups in Tamil Nadu in recent years.

After the Assembly elections, Congress ended its long-standing partnership with the DMK and backed Vijay's bid to form the government. The move angered the DMK leadership, which accused Congress of betrayal.

The fallout became so serious that the DMK announced it would skip the June 8 INDIA bloc meeting and even declared its exit from the alliance.

Political analysts believe that inviting TVK to the meeting could have further highlighted divisions within the opposition camp at a time when the alliance is already grappling with internal disagreements.

Will TVK Join the INDIA Bloc in the Future?

As of now, there is no official confirmation that TVK will join the INDIA alliance.

Vijay has consistently projected TVK as an independent political force focused on protecting Tamil Nadu's interests. He has frequently emphasized issues such as state rights and federalism while maintaining a degree of distance from national political camps.

However, with Congress now serving as a key ally in the Tamil Nadu government, speculation continues over whether TVK could eventually play a larger role in national opposition politics.

The Bottom Line

TVK's absence from the INDIA bloc meeting was not necessarily a political snub. Instead, it was largely driven by three factors:

  • TVK currently has no MPs in Parliament.
  • The party is not a formal member of the INDIA alliance.
  • The Congress-DMK fallout has complicated opposition politics in Tamil Nadu.

For now, Vijay remains a powerful regional leader attracting increasing national attention. However, TVK's role in national opposition politics is still evolving and remains a subject of political speculation.
