29th August 2023,Mumbai: Prime Minister Modi’s gift to the nation: A substantial Rs 200 reduction in domestic LPG cylinder prices, lightening the load for citizens.

On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, the Government of India has bestowed a considerable relief upon its citizens by slashing domestic LPG cylinder prices by up to Rs 200. This benevolent decision by the Cabinet will result in a fiscal burden of Rs 7,500 crore on the exchequer.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur Extends PM Modi’s Gift to Women

Union Minister Anurag Thakur expressed, “PM Modi has decided Rs 200 reduction in the price of domestic LPG cylinders, for all users…this is a gift from PM Narendra Modi, to the women of the country, during the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.” Additionally, the Centre plans to grant 75 lakh new LPG connections under the Ujjwala scheme, further enhancing access to clean cooking fuel.

Crucial Decision Ahead of Upcoming Assembly Elections

The Centre’s decision to lower LPG cylinder rates holds significant political importance, with Assembly elections looming later this year in five states – Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Mizoram. This move is expected to resonate positively among voters.

Last Revision of Rates and Commercial Cylinder Prices

The rates for 14kg LPG cylinders were last revised in March when oil marketing companies (OMCs) increased prices by Rs 50. In contrast, 19 kg commercial cylinder prices were decreased by Rs 100 in August. This reduction is seen as a step towards balancing these earlier changes.

Current LPG Cylinder Rates for Major Cities

As of now, the rates for 14 kg LPG cylinders in major cities from March are as follows:

– Delhi: Rs 1,053

– Mumbai: Rs 1,052.50

– Chennai: Rs 1,068.50

– Kolkata: Rs 1,079

A Decision Taken in a Cabinet Meeting

This significant decision was reached during a cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The upcoming elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram later this year, as well as the impending Lok Sabha elections early next year, have lent added weight to this timely decision.
