India Face New Zealand Test After Relentless T20I Travel
Shreyas Iyer addressing media ahead of their first T20I againt New Zealand.

India's cricket calendar rarely slows down and the T20I squad's journey to New Zealand may be a short one but they arrive within 72 hours of the series opener. Having played in Ireland, England, Zimbabwe, India and Japan, the squad has had little time to recover between assignments.

Captain Shreyas Iyer, however, believes the constant travel has become routine for the side.

The results haven't always been there for India either with a disappointing campaign in Ireland and England, a tough home series against West Indies and a gold medal-winning Asian Games campaign in Japan.

They now face a New Zealand side who are likely to provide another tough test, especially with conditions expected to play a major role.

Less Rest, More Cricket: Iyer's Approach

Iyer talked up the need to adapt quickly to conditions but said there was no issue with the amount of travel given how used to it the squad is.

Admitting that they have a lot less time to get proper rest, the captain added that playing so many matches will also help.

The pace in New Zealand, he admitted, would play a key role but Iyer remained patient as far as the pitch conditions are concerned.

With multiple players set to play their first match in New Zealand as well, Iyer felt that it was important to get the practice sessions right.

The experience in England has made the players aware that it's important to read the conditions instead of trying to impose their game.

A good practice game will help them understand the tracks and play the right brand of cricket, as per Iyer.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Experience Could Prove Crucial

With Bhuvneshwar Kumar returning to the squad, India have an experienced campaigner in the pace attack as they look to offset the expected role of pace bowlers in the series.

Buvneshwar's experience in T20s, including representing various T20 leagues around the world, will be crucial in such conditions, according to Iyer.

The left-arm pacer's plans will need to be put into action immediately in such conditions, according to Iyer.

At the same time, the competition for spots in the playing XI will help make sure that everyone is at their best, the captain added.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Tour of Learning

While the rise of young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has created plenty of chatter around him, Iyer said that the tour should be seen as a learning experience for the youngster.

The India openers have been in great form, which gives Sooryavanshi time to observe and prepare for the conditions overseas while also getting match practice as and when required.

Iyer Ready to Bat Wherever India Need Him

Iyer, meanwhile, spoke up for the cause of the position that suits him best.

Having played in various positions in the batting order in his T20I career, including a recent switch to number three, Iyer said that he was ready to bat anywhere the setup required him to.

However, he pointed out that it was more important for everyone to find a slot that suits them rather than personal preferences.

Ishan Kishan's recent performances at number three, for instance, have given the management food for thought.

The conditions in New Zealand are likely to suit the home team given their familiarity with the environment, but Iyer remained confident about the Indian setup.
