11th June 2023, Mumbai: Delhi Police has arrested Mohammed Kalim in connection with an alleged conversion racket at Turkman Gate Night Shelter. According to the police, Kalim would show YouTube videos of his religion to Hindu youths, question their faith, and coerce them into giving up their own religion. This modus operandi resembled that of the Ghaziabad conversion racket, where victims were shown videos and asked to recite religious verses before starting any work. Kalim even attempted to bribe one of the victims, promising him financial benefits, a government job, and a marriage arrangement if he converted to Islam.

The victim, Sandeep Sagar, who worked as a caretaker at the Night Shelter, lodged a complaint against Kalim. However, Kalim apologized, and Sagar withdrew the complaint. Despite this, Kalim continued his coercive tactics, leading Sagar to transfer to Turkman Gate Night Shelter. It was there that Kalim targeted Sagar again and two other Hindu youths, Sujit Kumar and Vicky Sharma. He would show them videos criticizing Hinduism and make efforts to lure them into converting to Islam.

Sagar also alleged that Kalim had successfully converted another Hindu youth named Sanjeet Kumar, who now goes by the name Abbas. Feeling harassed and pressured, Sagar filed a complaint against Kalim, accusing him of making inappropriate comments about his religion and attempting to tempt him into converting to Islam. Sagar urged the police to take legal action against Kalim for his unacceptable actions.

Mohammed Kalim, a B.Tech graduate in Computer Science, has been arrested by the police, who suspect that more arrests may follow. A special team is investigating the case. Based on Sandeep Sagar’s complaint, an FIR has been registered against Kalim under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Kalim was produced before the court and has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
