8th June 2023, Mumbai: Mumbai was left in shock after the Mumbai Police detained a 56-year-old man, Manoj Sahani, in connection with the murder of his live-in partner. The victim, Saraswati Vaidya, was brutally killed and her body was chopped into pieces. The couple had been residing in a rental flat in the Akashganga building in the Mira Road area for the past three years. The gruesome incident came to light when residents of the building reported a foul smell emanating from the couple’s flat, leading to the police’s intervention.
According to the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that Manoj Sahani had allegedly murdered Saraswati Vaidya three to four days prior. After committing the crime, he purchased a tree-cutter to dismember her body. The accused then proceeded to boil the body parts in a pressure cooker and packed them into plastic bags for disposal. So far, the police have recovered over 12 to 13 pieces of the victim’s body from the crime scene.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Mumbai, Jayant Bajbale, stated, “Police have found a body of a woman who had been cut into pieces from a society in the Mira Road area. Here a couple was living in a live-in relationship. A preliminary investigation revealed that the woman was hacked to death.” The suspect was apprehended by the police on Wednesday evening.
This shocking incident has brought back memories of the infamous Shraddha Walkar murder case that shocked the nation last year. Shraddha Walkar, a 27-year-old call center employee from Mumbai, was strangled to death by her live-in partner, Aaftab Poonawala. He subsequently dismembered her body into 35 pieces and disposed of them in a forest over a span of 18 days. Poonawala had even stored some of the body parts in a refrigerator and charred her face to conceal her identity. The case came to light six months later when Walkar’s father reported her as a missing person.
These distressing incidents serve as a grim reminder of the brutal crimes that can occur within domestic relationships. They highlight the need for increased awareness, vigilance, and support for victims of domestic violence. The police authorities are committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the recent murder and ensuring that justice is served.
