17th June 2023, Mumbai: Indian actor Ali Fazal, known for his work in both Hindi cinema and Hollywood, believes that he hasn’t been “pushed enough” as an artist in either industry. Despite this, Fazal remains optimistic and focused on being part of great stories. With notable films such as “Fukrey,” “Happy Bhag Jayegi,” and “Bobby Jasoos,” as well as the hit Prime Video series “Mirzapur” under his belt, Fazal has also made a mark in Hollywood with movies like “Furious 7,” “Victoria & Abdul,” and “Death on the Nile.”

In a recent interview, Fazal expressed his thoughts on his career, saying, “Honestly, I haven’t been pushed enough as an actor here (Bollywood), anywhere, even in Hollywood. It is fine, I’m not worried too much because those are teething problems as I am somebody coming from outside. So I will take that much time.” He emphasised his desire to be a part of good films and highlighted the importance of great storytelling, acknowledging that India has a wealth of such stories to offer.

To further explore his passion for storytelling, Fazal and his actor-wife Richa Chadha have established their own production banner called Pushing Buttons Studios. However, time constraints pose a challenge in balancing his acting career and production ventures.

Fazal’s latest Hollywood project, “Kandahar,” is an action drama featuring Scottish star Gerard Butler. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, known for films like “Angel Has Fallen” and “Greenland,” the movie draws inspiration from true events in the life of a former military intelligence officer. Fazal portrays the character of Kahil, who engages in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with Butler’s character, Tom Harris.

Although Fazal and Butler share only one scene together in the film, Fazal revealed that they bonded over conversations about films, food, and India. Fazal expressed his admiration for Butler’s generosity as an actor and his eagerness to host him on his next visit to India.

Reflecting on his experiences working with renowned actors such as Judi Dench in “Victoria & Abdul,” Butler in “Kandahar,” and Kenneth Branagh in “Death on the Nile,” Fazal expressed that he is not intimidated by his co-actors. Instead, he sees it as an opportunity to elevate his own performance. Fazal believes that working alongside talented actors who possess a strong command of their craft and a captivating presence makes his job easier and allows him to shine.

Looking ahead, Fazal has two upcoming projects lined up. He will collaborate with acclaimed filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj in “Khufiya” and work with director Anurag Basu on “Metro. In Dino.” Fazal described his experience with Bhardwaj as rewarding, appreciating the director’s ability to push him out of his comfort zone and provide a fresh perspective. He also expressed excitement about working with Basu, describing him as a phenomenal and unique director.

In addition to his Bollywood and Hollywood projects, Fazal is thrilled to be part of the forthcoming international film “Afghan Dreamers.” Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bill Guttentag, the movie tells the true story of a program initiated by Afghan tech entrepreneur Roya Mahboob in 2017. The program aims to empower young women in the field of science and technology, despite the challenges posed by a patriarchal society. Fazal plays one of the mentors in the film, and his co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge has also joined the cast
