27th October 2023, Mumbai: Taylor Swift has formally responded to long-standing rumors suggesting she had secretly dated a few of her close female friends.
Taylor Swift’s Album: Addressing Bisexual Rumors
In the prologue of her album “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” Taylor Swift shared that she began exclusively spending time with women because it became evident that people assumed she was romantically involved with men, even when they were just friends.
According to leaked screenshots posted on Twitter last Thursday, Taylor Swift wrote, “And so I swore off hanging out with guys. Dating, flirting, or anything that could be weaponized against me by a culture that claimed to believe in liberating women but consistently treated me with the harsh moral codes of the Victorian era.”
She decided to “alter [her] behavior,” hoping to shift the prevailing narrative. Taylor added, “I swore off dating and decided to focus only on myself, my music, my growth, and my female friendships.If I only hung out with my female friends, people couldn’t sensationalize or sexualize that right? I would learn later on that people could and people would.” Yet, even this choice couldn’t prevent others from making sensational and sexual conjectures.
In a 2019 interview with Vogue, Taylor Swift denied rumors that her song “Me!” was her way of coming out as LGBTQIA+. She clarified that she aimed to create positive art during a politically tumultuous period without necessarily being a part of the community she supported. At the time, she spoke to the magazine, “Rights are being stripped from basically everyone who isn’t a straight white cisgender male.”
The Era Tour girl added on, “I didn’t realize until recently that I could advocate for a community that I’m not a part of. It’s hard to know how to do that without being so fearful of making a mistake that you just freeze. Because my mistakes are very loud. When I make a mistake, it echoes through the canyons of the world.”
Taylor Swift and Dianna Agron Were Rumored To Be Dating
Rumors about Taylor Swift dating her female friends surfaced during her close friendship with actress Dianna Agron in the early 2010s. Swift even dedicated a song to Agron on her “Red” album. However, their friendship faded around the release of “1989” in 2014. Despite rumors, Agron consistently denied any romantic involvement, clarifying her mention in Swift’s song liner notes was about friendship, not romance.
Both Swift and Agron have supported the LGBTQIA+ community but have not openly confirmed any same-sex relationships. Taylor Swift is currently engaged to NFL player Travis Kelce.
