14th May 2023, Mumbai : Due to the continuing Hollywood writers’ strike, it appears that the Tony Awards 2023 ceremony won’t air as scheduled and may even be postponed. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) granted a strike waiver to event organisers, according to US media, allowing the annual ceremony to proceed as planned.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that the WGA, however, declined to approve the waiver on Friday. Following the expiration of their contracts, more than 11,000 union members went on strike last week. The strike has already caused the cancellation or postponement of several Hollywood films and other events, including the MTV Movie and TV Awards.

The Tony Awards, whichh will be held on June 11, are said to have been spared from protests while the script for the ceremony was being drafted.

Organisers apparently emphasised how important the Tony Awards are to failing Broadway productions and how such a move would be financially disastrous. It was decided that the ceremony on Friday would either be cancelled or postponed until the strike was ended.

The organisation, whichh claims that conditions have worsened as a result of the content explosion of the streaming era, is calling for higher minimum wages, more authors per show, and less exclusivity on single projects, among other things.

The 2023 Tony Awards ceremony was scheduled to be hosted by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose at New York’s United Palace.

There are a number of well-known nominees, including Sara Bareilles, Jodie Comer, and Samuel L. Jackson.
