Exclusive Interview: Shivam Malhotra Shares His Film Journey on Attention India’s Podcast with Rahul Varun

Shivam Malhotra, an aspiring filmmaker, shared his inspiring journey in a special podcast with Rahul Varun for Attention India. He began as someone who wanted to be an actor, but a classmate once said something that changed his life. The classmate told him that directors are more powerful than actors, even more than Salman Khan &Shahrukh Khan. That idea stayed in Shivam’s mind.Shivam studied direction along with journalism to understand the world better. He realised that a director can shape what the audience sees and feels. This power of storytelling pulled him towards filmmaking. Movies like 3 Idiots made him believe that good stories can change minds.

A Short Film That Made a Big Mark

Shivam created a short film called Vansh. It was released on Pocket Films and received praise from all over. It was selected at 16 film festivals and won 10 awards. The biggest moment was when it made it to the top 50 at the DadasahebPhalke International Film Festival.

A Story Inspired by His Father

Vansh was not just a film—it was a family project. The story was originally written by Shivam’s father in the year 2000. Shivam’s father has always been his biggest supporter and strongest critic. He encouraged Shivam to follow his dreams and helped him improve his work.

The Power of OTT Platforms

Shivam believes OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime have changed the way films are made. Now, even small filmmakers can reach big audiences. These platforms give freedom to experiment and make creative content without fear.

Dream of Working with Amitabh Bachchan and EmraanHashmi

Shivam wants to direct Amitabh Bachchan one day because he respects how disciplined and humble he is. He also admires EmraanHashmi’s natural acting skills. Shivam feels that even a small line from Emraan can make a big difference in a scene.

Lessons Learned While Making Films

One time, Shivam trusted someone to create background music for his film. But things did not go as planned. He learned that filmmakers must always keep an eye on everything, from sound to editing. He says a director should always review progress at every step.

Freedom for Actors Builds Better Films

Shivam believes that actors should be given freedom to perform in their own way. Once the director understands the actor’s style and ability, they should be trusted. This freedom helps actors give their best.

Promoting Films on a Small Budget

Today, big marketing budgets are not always needed. Shivam says Instagram is a powerful tool to reach people. If the story is strong, it will connect with the audience, even without money.

Perfection Takes Patience

Shivam shared that sometimes directors spend an entire day filming one perfect shot. Some directors like Rajamouli&Bhansaliare famous for their grand sets. But Shivam follows the style of Karan Johar, who focuses on storytelling and emotions more than glamour.

Cutting Scenes That Don’t Help the Story

Shivam explained why it’s important to remove scenes that don’t move the story forward. He gave an example of how repeating the same rituals in a death scene can become boring. His goal is to keep the audience connected to the story from start to end.

Growing Opportunities for Small Filmmakers

Shivam is happy that film festivals now accept short films for free. This helps many new creators who don’t have enough money. He once submitted his film to the Chandigarh Film Festival and won awards for Best Director and Best Film.

Using Films to Raise Social Issues

Shivam’s goal is not just to entertain but also to make people think. His short film Vansh talks about serious topics like female foeticide. He wants to use films to change the way people think about such issues.

Learning from Other Movies

He once saw Valatty, a South Indian movie about the lives of dogs. That movie touched him deeply and made him realise that stories can come from anywhere—even animals.

Family Is His Strength

Shivam gives credit to his family for his success. His grandmother taught him the value of unity. No matter how hard things get, his family stands by him. That support gives him the courage to take risks and follow his passion.

Respect on Set Is Important

Shivam says that his film sets always maintain a safe and respectful environment, especially for women. He feels this is important in today's world.

Support for Career Choices in Small Towns

He says that families in smaller towns are now becoming more open-minded. Social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube are helping youngsters prove their talent. This makes families more confident about their children’s career choices.

No Bad Experiences in Film Industry

Many people say that there are no real friends in the film industry, but Shivam disagrees. He feels lucky to have met good people. He thinks his positive nature and blessings from above protect him from bad experiences.

Views on Nepotism and OTT Censorship

Shivam believes that every person should earn their success. He wants his brother to prove himself before being cast in his films. He also talks about how OTT platforms have fewer restrictions, which is both a blessing and a problem. Some series focus too much on adult content, which he feels is not needed.

Importance of Both Box Office and OTT

According to Shivam, both theatres and OTT platforms are important. Theatres bring big audiences, while OTT gives creative freedom. A balance between the two can lead to better films.

With strong family support, clear values, and a love for storytelling, his journey is only just beginning. His belief in honest work, simple storytelling, and the strength of new platforms makes him an inspiring name for young filmmakers across India.
