12 September 2023, Mumbai: In a concerning development, two deaths in Kerala’s Kozhikode district have been confirmed as caused by the Nipah virus. The Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, announced this revelation on Tuesday. Additionally, four patients suspected of Nipah virus infection are currently under surveillance, with their samples sent for testing. The Nipah Virus
Nipah virus is a deadly zoonotic virus primarily transmitted by fruit bats. It poses a significant threat to both humans and animals. Symptoms include respiratory illness, fever, muscular pain, headache, dizziness, and nausea.

To tackle this emerging health crisis, a Central team has been dispatched to Kerala to assess the situation and provide assistance to the state government in managing the Nipah virus outbreak. The Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, emphasized the need for precautionary measures and mentioned that guidelines have been prepared by the Health Ministry.
Chronicle of Events
The first death attributed to the Nipah virus occurred on August 30, with the second death following on September 11. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed serious concern over these “unnatural deaths” and the state health department issued an alert in Kozhikode district.

Health officials suspect Nipah virus infection as the cause of these two deaths, which transpired in a private hospital in Kozhikode. Health Minister Veena George visited Kozhikode and held discussions with district authorities. The state has not officially declared a Nipah outbreak, pending results from samples sent to Pune Virology Lab.
