Chennai Airport Declares Full Emergency for IndiGo Flight

A full emergency was briefly declared at Chennai airport after an IndiGo flight from Kolkata reported a problem with its left engine.

The plane, which was carrying 224 people, landed safely at Chennai airport and the emergency was withdrawn just after landing. Airport activities were restored later on.

Chennai airport authorities say a full emergency was declared at 11:29 PM after the aircraft reported a left engine inoperative condition.

The flight was expected to reach Chennai at 11:37 PM, and its scheduled arrival time was 11:30 PM.

An Aircraft Safely Lands With 224 People On Board

The aircraft landed successfully on Runway 25 at 11:37 PM.

There were 224 people on board and all of them landed safely.

Emergency response teams had already been on standby after the airport’s emergency declaration to ensure the aircraft could land safely.

The full emergency was officially withdrawn at 11:47 PM, around 10 minutes after the aircraft landed.

After the emergency was lifted, airport authorities said all operations were normal.

Earlier IndiGo Flight Emergencies

The incident follows a number of IndiGo flights having technical troubles in recent months.

Last month, an international IndiGo flight from Dubai to Mumbai made an unscheduled emergency landing at Rajkot Airport after pilots received an alert about smoke in the aircraft's lower cargo hold.

The crew requested priority landing clearance from Air Traffic Control and fire tenders and medical teams were placed close to the runway.

IndiGo Flight Faced Engine Issue in Delhi

In March this year, another IndiGo flight approaching Delhi also triggered a full emergency after reporting an engine failure shortly before landing.

The flight, IndiGo 6E 579, was going from Visakhapatnam to New Delhi with 161 people onboard.

The Boeing 737-800 was given priority to land at Indira Gandhi International Airport and landed safely.

The latest Chennai incident also ended without casualties and the aircraft safely reached the airport despite the reported engine problem.
