Dowry Dispute Turns Fatal: Bride’s Father Dies at Wedding

Heated Argument Triggered by Dowry Demand

The bride’s family said that since the marriage was fixed, the groom’s side had repeatedly raised their dowry demands. The demands allegedly evolved according to allegations from a scooter to a motorbike and then ₹1 lakh in cash.

The disagreement reportedly escalated over the mehr amount. To the bride's family, the mehr fixed at ₹5 lakh was acceptable, whereas to the groom's family an amount above ₹21,000 was not acceptable. But after multiple attempts by family members and community elders to resolve issues and come to a deal, no agreement was reached.

Bride’s Father Suffers Fatal Heart Attack

The quarrel went on for a while but eventually the bride’s father, who was identified as Sadiq, reportedly became unwell. Family members rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors there declared him dead.

Relatives accused family members of the heated argument and the stress and pressure from the conflict caused the fatal heart attack.

Chaos Erupts After Death

It all took a turn-out with the news of Sadiq's death being passed on in the wedding venue. Furious family members and locals reportedly threw themselves into a roundabout rage over the groom and people at the wedding party.

The groom, Mohammad Arif reportedly, plus a number of relatives and guests, were detained inside the marriage hall and were apparently detained as a result of hearsay. At least a few members of the wedding procession were reportedly assaulted, too.

In the ensuing panic, a number of guests tried to break through the roof of another house nearby. A piece of the roof reportedly fell during the rush, injuring a few people.

Heavy Police Intervention at Wedding Site

Police arrived immediately in a scene which brought things under control. Security troops came in to contain more violence. They also took care of keeping the law in the corner of the area that remains calm and orderly.

Statements from both families are being recorded, authorities said and a comprehensive investigation is being carried out.

The death has once more initiated discussions regarding the damage dowry controversies will produce and also the cost these disputes will have emotionally on families.
