Rising Demand for BrahMos Missiles

India is witnessing a surge in demand for its BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles worldwide. Recent reports indicate that the Philippines is set to receive these missiles by March, while discussions are underway for potential sales to Saudi Arabia. Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto has also expressed interest, along with Vietnam, in acquiring these advanced defence systems.

Origins of the BrahMos Missile

In the early 1990s, recognising the strategic importance of cruise missiles, India embarked on a journey to develop its own system. Named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, the BrahMos missile was born out of an inter-governmental agreement between India and Russia in 1998. This led to the establishment of BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture aimed at designing, developing, and manufacturing the supersonic cruise missile system.

Features of the BrahMos Missile

The BrahMos missile is a two-stage system, equipped with a solid propellant booster as its first stage and a liquid ramjet as its second stage. With an original flight range of 290 kilometres, ongoing tests aim to extend this range to approximately 400 kilometres, with further developments targeting ranges of up to 800 kilometres. This versatile missile, capable of being launched from various platforms, including land, warships, submarines, and fighter jets, boasts a low radar signature, high supersonic speed, and exceptional precision.

Global Allure of BrahMos

The BrahMos missile has garnered attention worldwide for its unmatched capabilities. Its supersonic speed, reaching Mach-3, offers minimal reaction time for adversaries, making it a formidable weapon system. The missile’s precision, reliability, and cost-effectiveness have contributed to its growing popularity in international markets. With orders exceeding $7 billion, including both domestic and export orders, BrahMos Aerospace has positioned itself as a key player in the global defence industry.

Unique selling points of BrahMos

What sets the BrahMos missile apart is its combination of precision, versatility, and affordability. Indian Navy veteran Seshadri Vasan describes it as the world’s ‘Supersonic Darling’, highlighting its ability to deliver swift and devastating attacks. With a proven track record of successful tests, BrahMos offers the armed forces a cutting-edge advantage over their adversaries. Additionally, its cost-effective production in India makes it an attractive option for foreign nations seeking advanced defence solutions.

A Game-Changer in Defence Exports

As India aims to bolster its defence exports, the BrahMos missile emerges as a flagship product with immense potential. Its unmatched capabilities, coupled with growing international interest, position it as a game-changer in the global arms market. With ongoing efforts to enhance its range and versatility, the BrahMos missile is poised to maintain its allure and contribute significantly to India’s defence export targets.
