Bharat Ratna is the country’s highest civilian award. On March 30, President Draupadi Murmu honored four personalities with Bharat Ratna posthumously. These include veteran socialist leader Chaudhary Charan Singh, former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur and agricultural scientist Dr. MS Swaminathan.

The families of the four personalities accepted this honor in a program organized at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Narasimha Rao’s son PV Prabhakar Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh’s grandson Jayant Choudhary, Karpoori Thakur’s son Ramnath Thakur and MS Swaminathan’s daughter Nitya Rao received this honor from the President. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, BJP President JP Nadda and other dignitaries participated in this program.

Lal Krishna Advani could not attend the ceremony

The Central Government had announced five names for Bharat Ratna this year. In which the name of Lal Krishna Advani was also included. According to news agency ANI , Lal Krishna Advani could not attend the ceremony due to illness. President Draupadi will visit Murmu Advani’s house and honor him personally.

Who else got it during Modi’s tenure?

Earlier, during the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Madan Mohan Malviya, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Pranab Mukherjee, Bhupen Hazarika and Nanaji Deshmukh have received this honor. Including the 5 names of 2024, till now 53 people have received this honor.

Who is awarded Bharat Ratna?

Bharat Ratna is the country’s highest civilian honor which is given in recognition of extraordinary and supreme service to the nation in any field. This honor is given to a thinker, scientist, industrialist, writer and social worker in the fields of politics, art, literature and science. The provision for awarding Bharat Ratna is in Article 18(1) of the Constitution. 

The award of Bharat Ratna was started on January 2, 1954 by the then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The first honor was given to independent India’s first Governor General Chakraborty Rajagopalachari, former President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and scientist Dr. Chandrashekhar Venkata Raman in 1954. In 1954, this honor was given only while alive, but in 1955, the provision of giving Bharat Ratna posthumously also was added.

Bharat Ratna to agricultural scientist Swaminathan

President Draupadi Murmu awarded Bharat Ratna (posthumously) to agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan. The award was received by Nitya Rao, daughter of MS Swaminathan.

Bharat Ratna also given to Karpoori Thakur

President Murmu honored former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur with the Bharat Ratna award at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This award was received by his son Ramnath Thakur

Chaudhary Charan Singh also given the highest honor

President Draupadi Murmu honored former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh with Bharat Ratna (posthumously). This award was received by Jayant Singh, grandson of Chaudhary Charan Singh.

PV Narasimha Rao received Bharat Ratna

President Draupadi Murmu met former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao (posthumously) honored with Bharat Ratna Award. The award was received by his son PV Prabhakar Rao.
