Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to unveil Kolkata’s pioneering underwater metro service, marking a significant milestone in India’s transportation infrastructure.

  1. The Marvel of Kolkata’s Underwater Metro

Spanning a distance of 16.6 km, Kolkata’s new underwater metro represents a feat of engineering ingenuity. A substantial portion of the metro, approximately 10.8 km, traverses underground, including a tunnel beneath the iconic Hooghly River – the deepest of its kind in the country. The remaining distance extends above ground, providing seamless connectivity across the city.

  1. Vital Connectivity: Howrah to Salt Lake

A pivotal section of the underwater metro, spanning 4.8 km, serves as a crucial link between Howrah and Salt Lake – two bustling urban centres in Kolkata. This strategic connection promises to enhance mobility and alleviate congestion, offering commuters a swift and efficient mode of travel between these twin cities.

  1. Stations and Operations

With a total of six stations, including three underground, the underwater metro system is designed to accommodate the diverse needs of passengers. The streamlined operations leverage cutting-edge technology, such as Automatic Train Operation (ATO), ensuring seamless travel experiences and optimal efficiency along the route.

  1. Swift River Crossing

One of the most remarkable features of Kolkata’s underwater metro is its ability to traverse a 520-meter river stretch in a mere 45 seconds. This rapid river crossing underscores the system’s commitment to providing swift and reliable transportation solutions, further enhancing the city’s connectivity and accessibility.

  1. Affordable Ticketing

In a bid to promote inclusivity and affordability, ticket prices for the underwater metro start at a nominal ₹ 5 for the first two kilometres. The fare structure is designed to accommodate passengers from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, with incremental increases based on distance travelled, ensuring equitable access to this transformative transit option.

Let’s Know All About The Progress and Future Plans

While the Esplanade to Sealdah stretch remains under construction, the operational segment from Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah is already operational. Kolkata Metro authorities aim to complete the full East-West route between Salt Lake Sector V and Howrah Maidan by June or July, further enhancing connectivity and convenience for commuters.

Celebrating Technological Advancements

In April 2023, Kolkata Metro achieved a historic milestone by successfully navigating a train through the tunnel beneath the Hooghly River, laying the groundwork for the operationalization of the underwater metro. This achievement underscores the city’s commitment to innovation and progress in the realm of urban transportation.

Looking Ahead: Inaugural Celebrations

Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the inauguration ceremony symbolizes the national significance of Kolkata’s underwater metro project. Beyond its practical utility, the metro service represents a testament to India’s prowess in infrastructure development and a beacon of progress for cities across the country.

As Kolkata prepares to usher in a new era of urban mobility, the launch of India’s first underwater metro service serves as a testament to the city’s resilience, innovation, and commitment to shaping a brighter future for the residents of Kolkata.
