Pakistan Confirms Match Against India in T20 World Cup Tournament

Pakistan has agreed to play India in a scheduledTwenty20 World Cup match in Sri Lanka this Sunday, the Pakistani government confirmed on Monday, having previously announced it would not attend the match over geopolitical tensions. Pakistan had last week ordered its cricket team to withdraw from the Group A match as part of an effort to show solidarity with Bangladesh.

Scotland displaced Bangladesh in the tournament after it rejected a tour of India over security concerns. The Pakistani government, in a statement on X, said that the decision was reconsidered after engaging diplomatically and after messages from friendly countries. “In light of progress made during multilateral discussions and upon requests from friendly countries, the Government of Pakistan directs the national team to participate in its scheduled ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match on February 15, 2026,” the statement said.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board on earlier Monday had called on Pakistan to reconsider its position and to field the match. Pakistan also received messages from Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates and other member countries, which all called on Islamabad to assist in resolving the situation and prevent disruption to the tournament, said the government. Pakistan, which are set to play all their World Cup matches in Sri Lanka, would have forfeited two points by withdrawing from the game. A boycott would also have severely hurt the tournament, given that India–Pakistan confrontation is perhaps the biggest draw in the world of cricket.

India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav said last week that he would be travelling to Colombo as scheduled, regardless of Pakistan’s decision in regards to the match. It had become more strained relations between the likes of New Delhi and Pakistani cities Islamabad and Dhaka in recent months as political tensions became more prominent in cricketing matters. India and Pakistan have not played cricket on a bilateral level for years, and a special arrangement allows the two sides to meet at neutral venues for global tournaments taken up by either side. The top team in T20 internationals today—India seeks to make history by becoming first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup championship trophy and the first host nation to win it.
