Shekhar Kapur reviews Dhurandhar on Netflix, says Gulf ban stopped theatre watch

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur recently wrote about Adi tya Dhar’s Dhurandhar in response to its film release on Netflix. Lauding the film and its director, Shekhar said he was barred from seeing the Ranveer Singh-starrer at the cinema due to the film’s ban in some Gulf nations. He reviews Dhurandhar.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Shekhar lauded Dhurandhar for its gripping narrative and powerful performances. He wrote, “Finally saw #Dhurandhar on Netflix. Terrific storytelling and very high level of performances even from minor roles. Director #AdityaDhar deserves all the praise he’s receiving. Congratulations producer #JyotiDeshpande and excited about #Dhurandhar2.” Relying on a fan that had praised the film for standing strong as the first part while also laying the right groundwork for a sequel, Shekhar said “Agree.” Responding to fears of censorship being carried out on Netflix, he said that the film didn’t feel as heavily edited (there were muted swear words), and that its dialogue remained as it should.

Questions about why the veteran filmmaker had missed its December release at the movies prompted some users to ask. Dhurandhar did not release in Dubai, the city where he is based, Shekhar said. He shared that he also wants to see Dhurandhar 2 in theatres, as long as it is released in his neighborhood. Most importantly, the film was banned in six Gulf states including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait.
