9 July 2023, Mumbai: The Arunachal Pradesh unit of the National People’s Party (NPP) has decided to oppose the immediate implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the northeastern state. The decision was taken at the state executive meeting of the party, highlighting the party’s commitment to preserving the state’s diverse multi-ethnic and multi-tribal composition, as well as its strong customary and traditional identity.
During the meeting, the NPP unanimously adopted a resolution opposing the UCC, emphasizing the importance of respecting and preserving the state’s unique customary laws and tribal practices. The party believes that Arunachal Pradesh’s distinct laws and customs should be codified and modified as necessary to align with tribal practices, rather than imposing a uniform code on all citizens regardless of religion or local customs.
The consultation process initiated by the Law Commission on the UCC has prompted the NPP to voice its stance on the issue. While the commission seeks views from stakeholders, including public and recognized religious organizations, the NPP remains firm in its opposition to the immediate implementation of the UCC. Additionally, another resolution adopted at the meeting focused on the party’s demand for revoking the New Pension Scheme (NPS) and reintroducing the Old Pension Scheme.
The resolutions adopted at the executive meeting serve as the groundwork for the NPP’s preparations for the upcoming Assembly polls in 2024. The party emphasizes its secular nature and commitment to the overall development and welfare of every citizen in Arunachal Pradesh, regardless of individual or religious affiliation. With four MLAs in the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly, the NPP plays a significant role in shaping the state’s political landscape.
As Arunachal Pradesh’s NPP takes a firm stand against the immediate implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, the party reaffirms its dedication to preserving the state’s cultural diversity, customary laws, and tribal practices. By advocating for the codification and modification of existing laws, the NPP aims to protect the unique identity and traditions of the people of Arunachal Pradesh.
