The viability of the alliance was cast in doubt when Prakash Ambedkar, the head of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), demanded a significant number of seats during the seat-sharing talks inside the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

Stalemate in Negotiations

In spite of the exertions of prominent figures such as Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, and Balasaheb Thorat, Prakash Ambedkar persisted in his desire for ten to twelve seats in addition to representation for Muslims and Other Backward Classes. However, the MVA leaders turned down his suggestion, which caused the talks to come to a standstill.

Preparation for All Scenarios

MVA officials anticipated that Ambedkar may leave the alliance, so they prepared two possibilities for seat sharing: one that included VBA and another that did not. Should VBA decide not to take part in the negotiations, the latter scenario would assign seats based on the present quota.

Ambedkar’s Stand

Ambedkar believed his party would win, which is why he insisted on having a large number of seats. He was optimistic about gaining six seats on his own, especially in areas that the Congress was strong in, such as Akola, Amaravati, Solapur, Sangli, and Wardha.

Ongoing Discussions

Ambedkar reaffirmed his demands throughout the conference, stressing the necessity of seats for OBCs and minority candidates, when the negotiations reached a standstill. But MVA leaders did not commit, which meant more talks were required.

Strategic Moves by Sharad Pawar

In the meantime, in an attempt to fortify MVA’s position, Sharad Pawar started negotiations with Rashtriya Samaj Paksha’s (RSP) Mahadev Jankar in order to win the Madha seat in Solapur. The seat was offered to Jankar, a well-known Dhangar leader, in an effort to unite the community.

Conclusion

The conclusion of the continuing negotiations is still unknown as MVA struggles to satisfy the needs of many groups. The seat-sharing dynamics are made more complex by Prakash Ambedkar’s unwavering position and Sharad Pawar’s cunning political manoeuvres, highlighting the complexities of Maharashtra coalition politics.
