30th September 2023,Mumbai: India’s solar mission Aditya L1 has traveled beyond a distance of 9.2 lakh kilometers from the Earth and has successfully escaped the sphere of the Earth’s influence. It is now navigating its path towards the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 1 (L1), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said on Saturday.

India’s space endeavors have reached another remarkable milestone as the Aditya L1 solar mission embarks on an extraordinary journey. This mission marks the second time that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has ventured beyond Earth’s gravitational clutches, with the first being the Mars Orbiter Mission. As Aditya L1 continues its celestial voyage, it promises to offer invaluable insights into our nearest star, the Sun.

Setting the Course for Solar Exploration

This comes days after the spacecraft underwent a key maneuver in the early hours of September 19, marking the beginning of the spacecraft’s 110-day trajectory to the destination around the L1 Lagrange point, a balanced gravitational location between the Earth and the Sun.

The Aditya L1 mission took a significant step forward on September 19, executing a critical maneuver that set the spacecraft on its 110-day journey toward the L1 Lagrange point. This unique point in space, located between the Earth and the Sun, is characterized by a delicate balance of gravitational forces. “Off to Sun-Earth L1 point! The Trans-Lagrangian Point 1 Insertion (TL1I) maneuver is performed successfully. The spacecraft is now on a trajectory that will take it to the Sun-Earth L1 point. It will be injected into an orbit around L1 through a maneuver after about 110 days,” ISRO had said in a post on X. Aditya-L1 is the first Indian space-based observatory to study the Sun from a halo orbit around the first Sun-Earth Lagrangian point (L1), located roughly 1.5 million km from earth, which is about one per cent of the Earth-Sun distance.

Aditya L1 represents a pioneering endeavor for India as it becomes the nation’s first space-based observatory dedicated to studying the Sun. Positioned in a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L1 point, approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, Aditya L1 will have a ringside seat to observe the Sun’s outer atmosphere. This marks a monumental achievement for India’s space program, as it inches closer to unlocking the Sun’s secrets.

Probing the Solar Enigma

The Sun is a giant sphere of gas, and the Aditya-L1 spacecraft would study the outer atmosphere of the Sun. It will neither land on the Sun nor approach the Sun any closer.

Aditya L1’s mission isn’t one of landing or getting up close and personal with the Sun. Instead, it will be dedicated to the meticulous study of the Sun’s outer atmosphere. The Sun, a colossal sphere of superheated gases, holds myriad mysteries, and this mission aims to shed light on its enigmatic outer layers. Since its launch from Sriharikota, Aditya-L1, during its journey around the Earth, underwent four Earth-bound maneuvers on September 3, 5, 10, and 15 respectively, during which it gained the necessary velocity for its further journey to L1.
