Ashish Yadav Wins Historic Javelin Silver at World U20

Yadav became the first Indian since Neeraj Chopra to finish on the podium in the men's javelin event at the World U20 Championships. His performance also brought back memories of Chopra's historic junior world record at the 2016 edition.

The Indian thrower did a good job at the international level and won a silver medal for India.

Ashish Yadav Delivers a 74.09m Throw

Yadav came into the competition with a personal best of 74.49m, which he had achieved before the championships. He first qualified for the final with a throw of 69.80m.

In the final, Yadav started with a throw of 69.96m. His second attempt was marked as a foul but he quickly recovered.

His third throw was the turning point. Yadav sent the javelin 74.09m, moving into second place and putting himself in medal contention.

He followed it with throws of 72.31m, 70.62m and 67.98m on the other attempts. His consistency was enough to get the silver medal.

South Africa's Jan Hendrik Heymans wins Gold

Jan Hendrik Heymans of South Africa took the biggest throw of the competition to win the gold medal.

Heymans recorded 80.50m on his last attempt, a season best in the World U20 category. He had already taken the lead with his opening throw of 76.92m. Dominica’s Addison James was third with a best throw of 73.89m.

The final standings saw Heymans take gold, Yadav silver and James win bronze.India’s other finalist T Dharanidharan also performed very well. He finished sixth with a best throw of 72.35m.

Yadav Follows in Neeraj Chopra's Footsteps

Yadav’s achievement is significant because India’s last men’s javelin medal at the World U20 Championships came from Neeraj Chopra.

In the 2016 World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, Chopra produced a spectacular 86.48m throw to win the gold medal and also set a junior world record that remains the World U20 best.

Chopra’s performance turned him into a global name and generated huge interest in India's participation in junior javelin competitions.

However, Indian athletes failed to return to the podium in the men's event in the subsequent editions as well.Yadav has now ended that long wait with his silver medal in Eugene.

India's Long Wait Finally Ends

Since Chopra's historic victory, several Indian javelin throwers have competed at the World U20 Championships.

None were able to win a medal.

In the 2022 World U20 Championships, India's Vivek Kumar also came close to the podium. He finished fourth with a personal best of 72.17m.In 2021, Kunwer Ajai Singh Rana was fifth, while Jay Kumar was sixth.

Another Indian, Sahil Silwal, also finished fourth at the 2018 edition.These performances showed India’s growing depth in men’s javelin but also highlighted how difficult it had been for another Indian thrower to reach the podium.Yadav's silver is thus an important moment for India's next generation of javelin stars.

Dharanidharan Also Makes the Final

India had two athletes in the men’s javelin final, making the country even stronger in the event.

T Dharanidharan qualified for the final with a throw of 68.07m. He improved his performance in the final and eventually achieved a best of 72.35m.

He missed the podium, but his sixth-place finish added to India's strong performance in the competition.

Having two Indian athletes reach the final also reflects the growing talent of the country’s junior javelin programme.

Mohammad Ashfaq Finishes Eighth in 400m

India also participated in the men's 400m final, where Mohammad Ashfaq finished eighth.

Ashfaq clocked 46.20 seconds in the final. Despite failing to win any medals, he had already put up a solid performance earlier in the championships.During the heats, Ashfaq set a new Indian Under-20 national record of 45.81 seconds.

His performance demonstrated that India’s young athletes are progressing across different track and field events.

A New Chapter for Indian Javelin

Ashish Yadav’s silver medal is more than just another medal for India’s athletics team. It marks India’s return to the World U20 men’s javelin podium after a long time.

Neeraj Chopra's 2016 world junior title is one of the most important moments in Indian athletics. Yadav has provided another reason for Indian athletics fans to look forward to the future almost a decade later.

Yadav will hope to continue improving his distance as he moves towards senior-level competition with a personal best of 74.49m and a World U20 silver medal now on his record.
