Asian Games 2026: Sumit Nagal Reaches Tennis Quarterfinals

India continued to shine in the men’s singles quarterfinals of the Asian Games 2026 with Sumit Nagal beating Uzbekistan’s Sergey Fomin in straight sets.

Nagal, currently 249th in the ATP rankings and a former world No. 68, produced a great display to defeat Fomin 6-3, 6-2. This took him to the quarterfinals, where he will meet China’s Wu Yibing, who won a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games.

Sumit Nagal Cruises Into Quarterfinals

Sumit Nagal looked dominant throughout his match against Sergey Fomin. The Indian won the first set 6-3 and then 6-2 in the second set to book his place in the final 8.

His next opponent, Wu Yibing of China, will pose a much more formidable challenge. Wu was the men's singles silver medallist at the 2018 Asian Games.

In another men's singles match, India's Dhakshineswar Suresh was knocked out after losing to Chinese Taipei's Tseng Chun-hsin.

Indian Archers continue the Gold Medal Charge 

India enjoyed another memorable day in compound archery.

The women's compound team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep defeated China 238-234 in the final to win the gold medal.

The victory was particularly big for Chikitha and Prithika, who won their first Asian Games gold medals. For Jyothi Surekha Vennam it was her fourth Asian Games gold medal.

India's men's compound team also reached the finals after defeating South Korea 236-229 in the semi-final. The Indian trio of Sahil Jadhav, Kushal Dalal and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru will face China in the final.

Later, Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav got another gold for India in the compound mixed team event. They defeated South Korea in a dramatic shoot-off after the scores were tied.

The victory also secured India a qualification quota for the compound mixed team event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai Create History

India also celebrated a historic gold medal in shooting.

Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai won the mixed trap team gold medal and set a new Asian Games record in the process.

The Indian pair scored 34 points, surpassing the previous Games record of 30. Qatar took silver with 32 points, while China won bronze with 23.

The victory also marked India's first gold medal in the Trap Mixed Team event.

Neeru had already won the women’s individual trap gold medal, making her work at the Asian Games even more memorable.

Priya Ghanghas wins boxing bronze.

In boxing, Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medallist Priya Ghanghas finished with a bronze medal after losing to China's Yang Chengyu in the women's 60kg semi-finals.

Although Priya was not able to make it to the final, her semifinal performance gave India another medal in boxing.

Deepu Mallesh Breaks National Record Four Times

Deepu Mallesh has also impressed in sports climbing.

Mallesh broke his own national record four times during the men's speed qualification round. He eventually clocked 5.09 seconds, finishing 11th among 16 competitors and qualifying for the quarterfinals.

His previous national record was 5.39 seconds, which he had set during the Asian Championships in April.

Canoe Slalom: Pradhyumna finishes Sixth

In canoe slalom, Pradhyumna Singh Rathod placed sixth in the men’s kayak single final with a time of 125.21 seconds.

However, India's Pallavi Jagtap was disqualified from the women's canoe single final.

India Continues Strong Medal Run

India’s success in tennis, archery, shooting, boxing and other games has added to its medal tally at the Asian Games 2026.

According to the figures provided, India has now won 56 medals, including 9 gold, 21 silver and 26 bronze medals.

The shooting contingent has contributed 15 medals, including three gold, eight silver and four bronze medals.

With more events still going on in the Asian Games, India's athletes will go on to get more medals and continue with the medal count in the Asian Games to add a few more medals to the list.
