14 November 2023, Mumbai: Former Indian cricket team captain, Kapil Dev, shared insights on the sports drama ’83, depicting the World Cup victory with Ranveer Singh portraying him. Kapil mentioned that directly guiding Ranveer in his portrayal would have been inappropriate. Instead, the actor observed and grasped his gestures and speaking style at his own pace.
Kapil Dev’s Perspective on Viewing Ranveer Singh’s ’83
During a recent podcast, Kapil Dev mentioned watching ’83’ multiple times but had to cease due to overwhelming emotions. He emphasized the importance of detachment, avoiding deep emotional involvement in the film’s narrative.
While acknowledging feeling emotional during the viewing, he chose to stop after a particular intense scene. Kapil Dev also disclosed the most emotional moment in the movie, “The most emotional scene was the one where Man Singh (coach) gave a salute at the ground (in the match against Zimbabwe). When they refused to give us tickets, I think that was a very emotional moment.”
Kapil Dev also noted that back in their era, the Indian team faced a lack of recognition and received second-class treatment due to perceived lack of success. However, he emphasized the transformation, highlighting that Indian cricket has evolved into one of the most financially rewarding sports on a global scale.
Delve into 83
The film ’83’ faced challenges in recovering its significant costs at the box office due to an unfortunate release just before the second lockdown. With a global earning of less than Rs 200 crore, it fell below its budget that exceeded Rs 250 crore. Despite this, the movie received predominantly positive reviews.
During a recent episode of ‘Koffee with Karan,’ Ranveer addressed the film’s underwhelming performance, expressing that…“Coming out of the pandemic, we had this beautiful film 83. It was just released at the wrong time.”
Directed by Kabir Khan, the movie ’83’ featured Ranveer Singh in the lead role, with Deepika Padukone making a cameo appearance. It hit the screens on December 24, 2021.
