1 November 2023, Mumbai: Pakistan’s chances of reaching the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup have been revitalized after their emphatic victory over Bangladesh. This win marked their third in the tournament, keeping their hopes of making it to the last four alive. On the contrary, Bangladesh’s hopes of a semi-final spot have been dashed.

 Pakistan’s Convincing Victory

In their recent match at the Eden Gardens, Pakistan, led by Babar Azam, halted their losing streak with a convincing win over Bangladesh. Fakhar Zaman’s explosive batting and a stellar performance from pace bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi led to a comprehensive seven-wicket victory.

Bangladesh’s Struggles

Bangladesh, batting first in the crucial encounter, could only manage 204 runs before being bowled out in 45.1 overs. Pakistan’s bowlers, including Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jr, made it a low-scoring affair by taking six crucial wickets.

Semi-Final Chances

Despite their earlier struggles in the tournament, Pakistan still holds a chance of securing a semi-final spot. They have improved their net run rate and now sit in fifth place on the World Cup points table with a run rate of -0.024. They are two points behind Australia and New Zealand, who are in third and fourth place, respectively. South Africa, in second place, is four points ahead of Pakistan.

Path to the Semi-Finals

To reach the semi-finals, Pakistan needs one of New Zealand, South Africa, or Australia to lose a few matches and not reach the 10-point mark. In such a scenario, Pakistan can surpass the team with the lower net run rate and secure a semi-final berth. Pakistan’s fate in this cricketing event hinges on the outcomes of their remaining matches against New Zealand and England. While they will finish behind India in the standings, they have an opportunity to make a strong case for themselves and clinch a semi-final spot.
