Who Is Gulveer Singh? India's New CWG Silver Star

The ascent of India's long-distance running scene has found a new standard-bearer — Gulveer Singh — whose storied performances in recent years have established him as one of the country’s greatest track athletes. The Uttar Pradesh-born runner has gradually established himself with national records, continental medals and most recently, a historic silver medal in the men’s 10,000m at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. The feat made him the first Indian to win a medal in the event at the Commonwealth Games.

 Gulveer, who is in Sirsa village, Aligarh district, Uttar Pradesh, was born on June 1, 1998, and worked as a village track runner to become a fast pace distance runner who was trained on the village's roads. Chaired by Indian Army now, he has become one of the country’s most decorated achievers of the 5,000m and 10,000m events. His breakthrough came with a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2022 Asian Games, followed by further success on continental circuit.

The 27-year-old’s 2025 season was particularly exciting; he snatched double gold after reaching 5,000m and 10,000m gold at Asian athletics competitions. Along the way he also broke the Indian record books as he made national records in 5,000m, 10,000m and 3,000m. His best ever race 27:00.22 in the 10,000m made him one of the elite distance runners in Asia and one of the best in the world and in an international context in this sport as well.

Gulveer achieved further success with a 59:42 finish on a point-to-point course in 2026, making him the first Indian to break the 60-minute mark over half marathon. He’s also trained in Colorado Springs in the United States – honing those endurance and race tactics next to world-class competition. Those preparations bore fruit in Glasgow, where he produced a disciplined show to be awarded Commonwealth Games silver and set an example for Indian athletics

Gulveer Singh has now become one of the faces of India’s long-distance running revolution with a handful of national records, Asian titles and now, a landmark Commonwealth Games medal. In his prime, he is expected to contribute meaningfully towards India’s ambitions for medals during future World Championships, Asian Games and Olympic Games as he pushes Indian athletics to their own limits.
