Why IPL 2026 Fixtures Are Late – Polls, World Cup Shake-Up

An important factor in postponing release of IPL 2026 schedule would be the upcoming Assembly Elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Assam. The next elections are expected to take place during April and May which exactly coincides with the timing of the IPL.
West Bengal (home of Kolkata Knight Riders and Eden Gardens), Tamil Nadu (Chennai Super Kings and MA Chidambaram Stadium) and Assam (home to a few of the Rajasthan Royals matches in Barsapara Stadium) are all crucial IPL centres. 

Local police and other security forces are heavily involved in polling duties during elections, which is likely to result in shortages for IPL matches. This could require venues to change, impact on travel for the teams and the logistics for broadcasters and fans. 

T20 World Cup Adds to Chaos

This was only made more difficult with the continuing ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Leading IPL venues in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Ahmedabad are now filled.
The cricket board needs more time for stadium handover, pitch refurbishment and branding to prepare for the World Cup conclusion on March 8.
An initial schedule for the first two to three weeks of IPL 2026 may be unveiled soon, as well as the rest of the programme agreed after election dates and security clearances have been met. 

Dhoni's Limited Role in CSK Lineup

MS Dhoni is scheduled to play the 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The IPL legend was one of the players retained by the management ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction. 

However, with CSK’s new acquisition Sanju Samson at the top, there is little probability that Dhoni will play every league game. However, under the Impact Player rule, Dhoni did not have any particular need during the two most recent editions.
He has mainly been in a situational role, typically contributing late-order cameos. Dhoni has battled with issues with his knee and back all the years and the physical nature of keeping wicket and with the limited turnaround time between matches can impact him at this point in his career.
