History
Danish engineers formed Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in Bombay in 1946. L&T, which at first represented Danish manufacturers, moved its emphasis during World War II to ship fabrication and maintenance. When German engineers were imprisoned in India, they took advantage of the situation and entered the installation industry. L&T was formed as ECC in 1946 and began focusing on building jobs. Collaborations and alliances continued, including one with the Caterpillar Tractor Company for construction machinery. L&T became a manufacturing partner for ISRO’s space programme and played a vital role in India’s nuclear programme. L&T Construction was created in 1976 after ECC and L&T combined. Additionally, L&T contributed to defence system design and development projects with DRDO. L&T is a multifaceted conglomerate that is advancing India’s infrastructure and technology today.
