New Delhi (India) June 16: The National Testing Agency (NTA) expressed satisfaction over the government’s decision to impose temporary restrictions on Telegram in India until the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination is conducted on June 21. This step was taken as per section 69A of the Information Technology Act to prevent organized groups to be involved in cheating, thereby restricting use of the platform and circulation of fake claims of paper leaks.

The restriction imposed on the messaging app came weeks after allegations and misinformation over leak of the NEET UG question paper, which is one of India’s biggest entrance exams. The government officials stated that the move was to protect the examination process and the students from the circulated false material.

Government Cites IT Act for Telegram Ban

According to official sources, the ban was implemented using Section 69A of the IT Act that grants the government authority to block public access of content in India in the interest of the security and public order. This ban will only be temporary, it will be in effect until June 22.

The decision was implemented after Telegram channels became instrumental in spreading false information and demanded money for leak of question papers among the NEET candidates.

Officials Seek Freeze on Message Editing

Apart from imposing restrictions on the use of Telegram in India, government officials have requested Telegram to restrict the editing option within India till the NEET examination gets over. Officials stated that in past such cases, Telegram channels were seen to alter their posts by changing the dates to manipulate it and claim leak of examination papers.

It stated that in certain instances such manipulated question papers and other content related to it was shared and claims of paper leak were made to gain illegal monetary benefits.

NTA Assures Secure and Fair Re-Examination

NTA also said that NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination will be conducted in a transparent and secure manner, and the imposed restrictions were just to prevent candidates from falling victim to fraudsters online and avoid misleading the students. The aspirants were also asked to be cautious and verify information from official sources.
