Strikes in Sri Lanka prematurely, at 14 runs debut for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

India teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's much-awaited India A debut in the Tri-Nation Series came to a screeching halt. He just finished with 14 runs against Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, and everyone was right on their toes. The people on the field wanted to see if he could go on to stay red hot internationally. Sooryavanshi did start positively, but after an aggressive shot in the fourth over of his innings, he was cut short. India A captain Tilak Varma won the toss and chose to bat first. The spotlight turned immediately on Sooryavanshi, as he strode out to open the innings.

The youngster stepped up, crossing a boundary on the first ball he faced. Facing Sri Lankan pacer Mohamed Shiraz as best he possibly could, Sooryavanshi displayed beautiful stroke play and hit two beautiful boundaries through the off-side in the opening over. His fearless attitude also echoed the attacking cricket he waged during IPL 2026 for Rajasthan Royals. He was playing well from home and the left-handed hitter kept it right when he made a third boundary off veteran all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne. And at that point it seemed the teenager was settling into his innings and getting ready for a big score.

Cricket, however, can alter fast — and there we have it. Mohamed Shiraz finally delivered, the fourth ball of the fourth over he bowled a full-length ball that tempted Sooryavanshi with a single stroke of motion to continue. Trying to hit the ball straight down the ground, the boy didn't time it correctly. The bat twisted in his hands, and rather than clearing up the infield, the ball flew toward mid-off as it turned out. Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige was very perceptive and completed a great diving catch to dismiss him. The wicket resulted in big rejoicing from Shiraz, who had been struck for boundaries before. The Sri Lankan pacer was elated after winning the prized wicket of one of India’s most discussed young cricketers. Sooryavanshi was visibly disheartened and walked away after scoring 14 runs from 12 deliveries (three of them boundaries) during this time. Sri Lanka's bowlers adjusted their lengths on display and limited opportunities for scoring while his stroke-making ability showed. India A’s problems didn’t end there, however, and soon Prabhsimran Singh’s two runs ended up costing the team dearly in terms of playing time.

Sooryavanshi, despite the disappointing outing, remains one of the most exciting prospects in Indian cricket. His thrilling IPL 2026 season (and his 776 runs and honors as well) got him a spot in India's T20I series against Ireland and England. He is also the youngest player to ever get called up by India, breaking a long-standing streak. Sachin Tendulkar was the same person in India for many years. The first innings of his career did not go according to script, but already, the young sportsman had shown tremendous talent and potential. Cricket fans hope he will make a comeback strongly in the next few matches in the Tri-Nation Series and further his rapid ascent in Indian cricket.
