11 June 2023, Mumbai: Asur 2, directed by Oni Sen and featuring talented actors Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti, has taken the streaming platform Jio Cinema by storm. Garnering praise from viewers, both seasons of Asur are now available for free streaming. This gripping Indian series has captivated audiences with its unique blend of mythology and science, earning it the title of the best Indian series by many. Oni Sen, the director, Gaurav Shukla, the creator, and Abhijeet Khuman, the writer, gathered to discuss their show in great detail.

During an interview, director Oni Sen shared his thoughts on the possibility of Asur being adapted into a feature film. When asked about the initial plans for a 2½-3 hour film format, Sen stated, “I think the vision would have been different. What Gaurav had written at that time, which I haven’t read, would surely have been different. Personally, I believe it could have been possible if approached from a different perspective. Many films manage to be extremely gripping and complex within the realm of 2½ hours. However, the spread-out nature of the show, especially in season 2, with each character having their own arcs and stories, would not have been possible in a film adaptation. It would have required a more compact canvas.”

Gaurav Shukla, the creator of Asur, shared his appreciation for filmmakers who can deliver impactful content within a shorter runtime. Reflecting on his original vision for Asur as a film, Shukla said, “The goal was to create a highly compelling film. Television couldn’t do justice to such content. The show allowed us to explore the stories of supporting characters as well. If I were to make a film, it would revolve around Dhananjay, Nikhil, the villain, and perhaps Lorark’s character. The film adaptation would have been centered around the main plot. However, delivering the same impact in lesser time would pose a greater challenge for a writer and director. Making films is a distinct craft, capable of conveying powerful messages. Both mediums are different.”

When asked if he ever considered condensing the show into a more concise version, Shukla revealed his fascination with the idea of a spinoff based on the character Shubh. He conveyed, “The thought traversed my mind, my fervor lies in crafting an intricate spinoff centered solely upon the persona of Shubh.” There is so much untold and unexplored potential. Instead of turning Asur into a film, I would prefer to delve deeper into the world of Shubh.”
