A blocked nose is very common during these winter months and can be very frustrating. A blocked nose is often a result of poor air quality or cool air in the atmosphere. If you have frequent congestions, try these home remedies which can offer relief from a runny nose. A runny nose by itself normally doesn’t cause concern. If you’re not experiencing any additional symptoms, there are several natural self-care methods you can use at home to treat a runny nose without using medicine.

Steam Inhalation

Nasal congestion can be soothed with the age-old therapy of steam inhalation. Heat some water, then place your head over the saucepan and use a towel to create a temporary steam tent. Take ten to fifteen deep breaths. A few drops of eucalyptus oil, which is well known for its decongestant qualities, can be added to the steam for an extra push. You can add a few drops of decongestant essential oils to the steam water for your face if you’d like. It takes about two drops for every ounce of water. Eucalyptus, peppermint, pine, rosemary, sage, spearmint, tea tree (melaleuca), and thyme essential oils are great options. Compounds in these plants (like menthol and thymol) are also found in many over-the-counter (OTC) decongestants.

Hot Beverages

A relaxing hot cup of anything works wonders for a runny nose. Enjoy a hot cup of herbal tea (ginger, lemon, and honey are a traditional combination) or warm milk infused with cinnamon and turmeric. The heat facilitates mucus release, and the herbs have decongestant and anti-inflammatory qualities.


A neti pot is a vessel used to clean your nasal cavities of debris or mucus. A neti pot can be used to alleviate cold, sinus, and nasal allergy symptoms. It’s crucial to use distilled or sterilized bottled water if you decide to create your saltwater solution. If the tap water has been heated for a few minutes and then allowed to cool until it’s lukewarm, or if it has been through a filter with particle sizes of 1 micron or less, it can be used.

More Hydration

Drinking enough water is essential when your nose is acting up. Drink lots of water, clear broths, and even warm fruit juices as thin mucus is easier to pass. Instead of consuming dehydrating beverages like alcohol and coffee, try to get 8 to 10 glasses of fluid each day.

Spicy Foods

Including foods high in spice, such as chilli peppers, can naturally relieve congestion. Spicy foods contain a chemical called capsaicin, which helps clear congestion and open nasal passages. These tasty solutions provide relief from a runny nose, whether added to meals or enjoyed in hot soups. Spicy spices such as ginger, wasabi, horseradish, cayenne pepper, ghost pepper, and habanero are excellent choices. In addition to giving off a warming sensation when consumed, these spices open up the body’s airways and help treat sinus problems.
