Is Shreyas Iyer the new captain for India’s white ball team? Details here

New Delhi (India) June 8: Shreyas Iyer's impressive IPL 2025 season with the Punjab Kings has increased the possibilities of being India's next white-ball captain. His consistent performances and effective leadership has helped him to become a strong contender to replace Rohit Sharma in white ball cricket.

Shreyas Iyer is now regarded as more than a dependable batsman because of his sound decision-making and mature understanding of the game. He is emerging as a capable captain who could head India's white-ball teams in the future. As Team India considers someone other than Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer could be the captain they need.

According to sources, a top BCCI official made a big statement that said, “We can’t keep Shreyas out of T20Is or Tests anymore. And yes, he’s now in the white ball captaincy race.” before the IPL Final.

After a great IPL 2025 season with the Punjab Kings, Shreyas Iyer has silenced trollers and strengthened his chance for the captaincy of Team India. Despite winning the IPL title with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last year, Iyer had to prove his leadership abilities again, as many saw him as a remote-controlled captain. Many people claimed that Gautam Gambhir was truly controlling KKR, the IPL 2024 winning team.

Captaincy in the Indian team remains a contentious issue at the moment. Team India has three different captains for each format: Shubman Gill for Tests, Rohit Sharma for ODIs and Suryakumar Yadav for T20Is. However, it is understood that the system cannot be maintained permanently. India will most likely have one white-ball and one red-ball skipper in the next few years.

Iyer has played 14 Tests, 70 ODIs and 51 T20s. He last played a Test for India in February 2024.
