The Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi strongly condemned the attack; he said the frigate had recently been on an international naval event hosted by the Indian Navy.
Iran warns US of consequences
In response to the incident, Araqchi wrote on X that the vessel, carrying nearly 130 sailors, was attacked in international waters.
He warned the United States would “bitterly regret” the move, calling the strike a dangerous escalation.
“Frigate Dena, a guest of India's Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning… The US will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set,” Araqchi wrote.
Ship had recently visited India
The Iranian warship had recently joined the International Fleet Review taking place in Visakhapatnam, where naval forces from multiple countries took part.
A US submarine torpedo hit the vessel causing it to sink in the Indian Ocean, reports said.
Casualties reported
It is said that at least 87 people aboard the ship died as a result of the incident. If confirmed, it would be the first time the US has sunk a ship with a torpedo in the Indian Ocean since World War II.
The move could escalate already tense relations between Iran and the United States and attract interest from countries in the Middle East and beyond.
