Trump: Obliterated Targets in Raid

These strikes are part of the escalating tensions following Trump’s threat of significant military action against Iran’s critical infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, if the deadline was not met. Earlier, on March 13, Trump claimed that American forces had “totally obliterated” military targets on Kharg Island, declaring it “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East” in a social media post.

Kharg: Iran's Vital Oil Export Lifeline

Kharg Island is vital for Iran , serving as the nation's main terminal for crude oil exports and located about 30 kilometers south of the mainland, in the northern Gulf. It houses several storage and shipping facilities, including large oil and petrochemical plants. Its strategic importance lies in its deepwater access, allowing large crude carriers to dock, which is not possible along much of Iran’s shallow coastline. 

Global Oil Fears Rise Over Strait Disruptions

Disruptions in Kharg could have serious implications for global oil supplies, as damage to export infrastructure might lead to a significant increase in crude prices.
Fortunately, major oil operations on the island have largely been left untouched by the ongoing conflict, likely to prevent destabilizing the global energy market. However, even minor strikes near such a crucial port can raise concerns about the safety of supply and shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, which is essential for international oil trade.

Israel, US Target Iran Bridges and Sites

The reports from Kharg Island coincided with the Israeli military’s announcement of a broader campaign targeting “infrastructure sites” across Iran, although specifics about these sites were not disclosed.
"A short while ago, the IDF completed a wide-scale wave of strikes targeting dozens of infrastructure sites belonging to the Iranian terror regime in several areas across Iran," the military said.
On the same day, the U.S. and Israel also conducted an attack on a bridge near the Iranian city of Qom, south of Tehran, according to the province's deputy governor.
