Mumbai Woman Alleges Uber Driver Assaulted Her Over ₹40 Fare Row

Mumbai A woman complained in Mumbai that she had been assaulted by an Uber driver who told her the additional ₹40 had not been included on the app fare after refusing to pay more than ₹40. Shared in a viral Instagram post, the incident triggered widespread concern over passenger safety and ride-hailing services.

The Uber app showed the woman’s fare as ₹501. But the driver purportedly demanded another ₹40 cash. The situation reportedly got tense when she wouldn’t pay the additional payment.

Woman Claims Driver Threatened and Assaulted Her

The woman said the driver attempted to intimidate her by getting closer. When she pushed him back in self-defense, he allegedly slapped her, grabbed her hand, twisted that hand, and threatened her. She said the whole thing was terrifying and that at the time, she felt powerless.

In a video that she gave on social media, she added that the driver went on lock as she tried to exit with one foot outside the vehicle. The driver then exited the car and confronted her aggressively, she said. Some bystanders intervened, apparently helped mediate the situation.

According to the woman, the driver expressed little regret over his actions and was still threatening her. She also stated that after the incident, her Uber account was subsequently disabled.

Uber Responds After Viral Post

Uber replied publicly, saying that any type of physical harassment or violence is unacceptable on the app, after its post went viral. The firm said it had responded by taking action against the driver and verified that the woman’s account was restored. Uber said it will also coordinate with law enforcement units if necessary.

Social Media Users Raise Safety Concerns

The episode generated intense social media responses, with numerous users lamenting Uber’s handling of safety complaints. Many users were upset by what they saw as an account suspension or worse, said they were pressing for heavier steps from the authorities against drivers in such actions.

The case has once again raised concerns over passenger safety--and also the effectiveness support systems on Indian ride-hailing platforms.
