Sudha Murty Gets Rajya Sabha Nomination

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that Indian educator and author Sudha Murty has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

Married to Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, Sudha Murty is a prolific writer in both Kannada and English, having written travelogues, technical publications, and novels. Venture investor Akshata Murty, the wife of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is her child. Sudha Murty was born in Shiggaon, Karnataka, on August 19, 1950. She started her career as an engineer and computer scientist before joining Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco) as the first female engineer employee.

Murty engages in a lot of charitable work. The Infosys Foundation, which addresses problems including poverty, healthcare, and sanitation, is chaired by the Padma Bhushan recipient. She has created school libraries, built thousands of homes in flood-affected areas, and provided funding for the installation of public restrooms through the foundation. Given that she established Harvard University’s Murty Classical Library of India, her influence goes much beyond India.

PM Modi announced her Rajya Sabha nomination
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that Indian educator and author Sudha Murty has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha. He shared the news in a post on X. “I am delighted that the President of India has nominated @SmtSudhaMurty Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields, including social work, philanthropy, and education, have been immense and inspiring,” PM Modi wrote.”

The Prime Minister said that Murty’s election to the Upper House is “a powerful testament to Nari Shakti (women power), exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping the nation’s destiny” in his declaration on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Thanking PM Modi for the nomination, Murty, who is now outside of India, said, “It’s a big Women’s Day gift to me.” It’s a new responsibility to work for the country.”
