Amit Shah Says Govt Ready to Debate Student Protests

In his letter, Shah asked the Speaker to speak with Opposition parties and decide when they want the discussion to take place. He also said the Speaker could allocate as much time as necessary for the debate.

Shah said the government has already made it clear that it is prepared to discuss the student agitation and allegations related to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG).

Govt Ready to Discuss NEET and Student Protests

Amit Shah referred to a statement made by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju in a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee. Shah said the government had already expressed its willingness to discuss the student protests and the NEET-UG paper leak controversy in Parliament.

In his letter, Shah also pointed out that the Opposition had earlier asked for a discussion during the ongoing Parliament session on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.

He said that during that discussion no Opposition MP had raised the NEET examination issue in the House. But Shah said the government is ready to discuss it again.The Home Minister said the government has nothing to hide and is ready to respond to Opposition members’ questions.

Amit Shah says he wants to be present for debate

Shah said he would like to be in Parliament when the discussion takes place. He also said he will answer all the questions that the Opposition raises on student protests and other related issues.

Shah highlighted the importance of parliamentary debate and said solutions can only emerge when we have proper discussion and dialogue in a democracy.He said he is confident in India’s democratic institutions and Parliament is the right place for different political parties to discuss important national issues.

Shah said disagreements and differences of opinion should be discussed in a debate rather than Parliament being disrupted.

Opposition asked to allow Parliament to function

A day earlier, Amit Shah told reporters that the government is ready to discuss not only the student protests but also the police action that followed the demonstrations.However, he said the discussion can take place only if the Opposition allows Parliament to function.

The Opposition has been demanding Shah’s presence in the House and a statement from him regarding allegations of police excesses during the July 20 student protest march. Pellet guns have also been reported during the protests.

Shah maintained that he has been regularly coming to Parliament despite Opposition leaders claiming he has been absent or “missing”.

He said he was ready for a discussion and asked the Opposition to formally communicate with the Speaker on the timing of the debate.

Shah suggested that if the Opposition submitted a letter to the Speaker by 2 pm, the discussion could begin at 3 pm on Wednesday.The ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament has led to a lot of disruption from both the student agitation and the NEET-UG paper leak controversy.

Opposition parties have been demanding a detailed discussion on the protests and the police action against demonstrators. They have also sought answers from the government on the alleged irregularities and paper leak concerns surrounding the NEET examination.

The controversy took root after mass student protests which also resulted in political pressure on the government and the resignation of then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The Opposition has also continued to raise issues in and outside Parliament and has accused the government of stalling the debate on the matter and refusing to have a proper debate on the matter.The government rejects these claims and says it is ready to talk about it.

Amit Shah Hits Back at ‘Missing’ Claims

Amit Shah also responded strongly to the Opposition’s criticism that he had been “missing” from Parliament.His comments were made in front of journalists outside Parliament and he said he has been coming to the Parliament complex regularly and sitting in his chamber.

Shah also questioned the necessity of entering the House when proceedings were repeatedly being disrupted and not allowed to function.

He criticized the use of words such as “missing” and “fugitive” in political and parliamentary discussions and said such language has increasingly become part of public discourse.

Shah also argues that the government can’t have a meaningful discussion unless Opposition members allow the House to function normally.He admitted that the government is ready for a debate but said collaboration from all political parties was needed in order for Parliament to carry out its work.

Shah Says Dialogue Is the Way forward

The Home Minister’s letter to Speaker Om Birla comes amid a continuing political deadlock over the student protests and the NEET paper leak controversy.

Shah has made it clear that the government is willing to talk about this issue and answer questions put forward by Opposition parties. He has also left the decision on the duration of the debate to the Speaker.

As Parliament has been disrupted again and again, the next step will depend on whether the government and Opposition will be able to agree on the timing and format of the discussion.

For now, Amit Shah’s message is clear: the government says it is ready for a full debate on student protests, NEET-UG and related issues, but it wants Parliament to function so that the discussion can take place.
