Psychological First Aid Must for Disaster Victims: Experts Urge Action
NDMA and Health Ministry stress on mental care after calamities

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] April 22: In Wayanad, after the July 2024 landslides, many people felt trapped inside their own minds. Loud thunder and sudden fear still haunt them. This happens because even when the ground stops shaking, the fear stays. That is why psychological help must come early, just like food or medicine. Experts say these invisible wounds should not be ignored. Many people feel scared to talk, but help can guide them to feel safe again.
Why Mental First Aid Matters
Experts from NDMA and MoHFW shared that mental stress after disasters can last for months or even years. Simple support like talking, listening, or being kind can help. Psychological First Aid (PFA) is like a first-aid box for the mind. It is not just for doctors—anyone can learn it. This small help brings big changes, like better sleep and fewer bad dreams. Children and elders feel less afraid when someone listens with care.
Stories from Wayanad, Sikkim and Mandalay
Victims from the Wayanad landslide and Sikkim flood said loud sounds remind them of danger. In Mandalay’s earthquake, children showed blank faces—signs of stress. Some survivors fear rain and strong winds now. These are not just stories; they are signals asking for help. Doctors and counsellors must reach them fast. Trained volunteers can make a difference. When people see kindness, they find strength. Slowly, the pain becomes lighter.
Making More Helpers, Not Just Healers
India has only 2,000 trained mental health counsellors. But disasters affect lakhs of people. So, we need more helping hands. Schools can train teachers and students. Art, yoga, and games can make people feel calm again. Group support and peer talks also work well. Experts say that asking victims to repeat their painful stories may hurt more. So, volunteers must be taught how to care with love and silence too.
Plans That Heal the Nation Together
NDMA now wants digital mental health platforms for fast help. More counsellors will be trained and sent quickly when a disaster happens. Corporates are also being told to give more funds for disaster mental care. Every rupee spent on kindness brings smiles. Post-disaster healing must be as strong as physical recovery. When we treat the mind with the same care as the body, true healing begins. Helping others rise makes the whole nation stronger.
